Ictal Pure Word Deafness with Auditory Hallucination

Pure word deafness is a disorder of auditory verbal comprehension without dysfunction of speaking, reading, or writing. This rare symptom arises from bilateral lesions in the temporal lobes or disconnection between the primary auditory cortex and Wernicke’s area. Word deafness in Wernicke's aphasia.

Three patients with otherwise typical Wernicke's aphasia showed consistent superiority of visual over auditory comprehension. The precedents for and anatomical basis of a selective auditory deficit in Wernicke's aphasia are discussed, including the relationship to pure word deafness. One implication of spared visual language function may be the use of gesture in language therapy for such patients.

Modality independence of word comprehension.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine the functional anatomy of word comprehension in the auditory and visual modalities of presentation. We asked our subjects to determine if word pairs were semantically associated (e.g., table, chair) and compared this to a reference task where they were asked to judge whether word pairs rhymed (e.g., bank, tank). Spared Priming Despite Impaired Comprehension: Implicit Memory in a Case of Word-Meaning Deafness

Word Deafness and Auditory Cortical Function

A patient who already had Wernicke's aphasia due to a left temporal lobe lesion suffered a severe deterioration specifically of auditory language comprehension, subsequent to right temporal lobe infarction. A detailed comparison of his new condition with his language status before the second stroke revealed that the newly acquired deficit was limited to tasks related to auditory input. Further ...
